The New Year in Basel: celebrate the New Year in the Münsterplatz plaza
Each year Basel celebrates the coming of the New Year with an impressive firework display above the Rhine.
As the Stadtposaunenchor choir’s trumpets play, the crowd gathers on the Münsterplatz plaza starting at 10:30 pm. Around 11:45 pm the end of the year is announced by the Martinturms’ great bell.
At midnight, the people toast with Champagne to celebrate the year that has just begun and say goodbye to the one that’s ending. All the spectators then go to the cathedral for the religious service that starts at 12:15 am.
To close out the event, at 12:30 am the fireworks are launched for a grandiose show above the Rhine.
The fireworks are free, and so is the mulled wine that’s served to spectators between 11 pm and 1 am.
